Vanderbilt’s Dan Jackson stepping down as AD
Vanderbilt University has decided to suspend its defensive backs coach Dan Jackson while it conducts an internal review. The move comes after Jackson defended Kanye West on Facebook, which sparked outrage. The rapper, who goes by Ye, recently made anti-Semitic comments, and Adidas has since dropped the rapper and suspended him from Twitter and Instagram. In response to the incident, Vanderbilt’s athletics ministry has referred the matter to its office of equal opportunity and access.
Jackson apologized for the comments on Twitter and has taken responsibility for them. Lee and Lea released a joint statement condemning antisemitic and discriminatory remarks. However, they did not elaborate further on the situation. Currently, the university has no immediate plans to fill the vacant position.
Jackson has worked as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt for just one season. Previously, he worked at Northern Illinois and South Dakota State. While at Northern Illinois, Jackson worked to turn the program around, and the Huskies went from winless in 2020 to MAC champions two seasons later. Jackson is not expected to be at Vanderbilt on Saturday when the Commodores take on Kentucky.
Williams, the first African-American athletic director in SEC history, will remain as the AD until a replacement is hired. He will then transition to being a full-time law professor at the Vanderbilt Law School. Additionally, he’ll continue his work as vice chancellor of student affairs. Finally, he’ll focus on developing a program on sports, law, and society at the school.
